Hoisin Sloppy Joes with Asian Style Slaw & Crispy Onions Rings

These sloppy joes are slightly alternative but I promise they are ridiculously addictive served up with an Asian inspired slaw, crispy onions and tasty sesame buns. You can make your own crispy onions or buy them shop bought like I do here!

Method

  1. 1. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion for 10 minutes with a pinch of salt until softened. Add the garlic and ginger and fry for a minute more. Increase the heat, add the mince and fry all over until browned.
  2. 2. Add the rice wine vinegar to the pan alongside the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ketchup and 150ml/ ⅔ cup of water, simmer for 30-40 minutes, adding more water if it gets too dry.
  3. 3. For the slaw, mix all the veggies together in a large bowl. Add the mayo, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil and toss to combine.
  4. 4. Check in on the mince, season to taste & add the sriracha sauce.
  5. 5. Once cooked, divide the mince mixture between sesame buns. Top with slaw (or serve on the side) and the crispy onions.

Ingredients

2 tbsp sunflower oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

Thumb size piece fresh ginger, peeled & finely chopped

1 lb beef mince

1 tbsp rice wine vinegar

2 tbsp soy sauce

3 tbsp hoisin sauce

2 tbsp ketchup

 ⅔ cup water

1 tbsp sriracha sauce

4 Arnold Sesame Seed Buns

Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

For the slaw:

¼ red cabbage, finely shredded

¼ green or pointed cabbage, finely shredded

2 large carrots, julienned

4 spring onions, finely chopped

2-3 tbsp mayo

1 tsp rice wine vinegar

1 tsp sesame oil

To serve:

3 oz crispy onions

2 tbsp sunflower oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

3 tbsp hoisin sauce

2 tbsp ketchup

150ml water

1 tbsp sriracha sauce

For the slaw:
